Residents against Gold Coast casino

Anti-casino protesters asked the State Government to stop the attempts to build a casino in the territory.

Australia.- More than 300 anti-casino protesters gathered at Carey Park, in Southport on Saturday toast the State Government to stop plans for the controversial development of a casino in the zone, put forward by Mayor Tom Tate.

As Gold Coast Bulletin reported, the protesters are against the plan presented by the mayor of the city. As reported las month, Tate asked the government to consider land occupied by Carey Park, The Southport Bowls Club, Southport Tennis Club, as the site for a new integrated resort and casino.

Earlier in August, the Queensland Government denied ASF consortium, a Chinese venture, the possibility to build the casino resort development on the Southport Spit in Gold Coast. The Chinese consortium’s project included a five-tower development that would’ve included a casino, entertainment venues, hotels, residential apartments and theaters. ASF was the preferred bidder for a second casino that would create 13k jobs and inject US$558k into the local economy.

Eddy Sarroff, former councillor, said: “Stop this nonsense. There has been no consideration of a bowls club which has been here for more than 100 years or of the easy access to car parking that bowlers enjoy when they come to this magnificent bowls club. “I am concerned at the loss of the tennis club and the suggestion that it would go somewhere else far away without any consideration for them or any champions which came from that club, the locals and people from a wide area who use it,” and he added: “We are all concerned and we want the premier to hear our message that public land is not for sale.”
