Ghana official wants to control gambling

The MP is supporting laws to avoid the expansion of commercial gambling in Ghana.

Ghana.- MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour is promoting the creation of a law to stop the expansion of gambling in the African nation. The Assin South Constituency member believes that the Gaming Act 2006 is not enough to control the operations in Ghana.

According to GhanaWeb, the MP commented on the issue on the Parliament floor. Fordjour said that the number of licenses granted for several gambling modalities such as sports betting casino and slot machines exceed the number that they should’ve gave away, therefore they were illegally operating.

“This country does not possess the requisite resilience and capacity to contain the grave ramifications and hazards that the current state of gambling liberalisation potentially poses. Therefore, the proliferation of commercial gambling must be strongly discouraged in our society.. Mr. Speaker, the principle and practice of commercial gambling and the proliferation thereof, are fundamentally alien to and in-congruent with the rich and bold cultural values of our beloved nation-state Ghana,” he added.

The official claimed that in the next 30 years he doesn’t want to see a population that is used to gambling and “quick-money-generating ventures.” Furthermore, he expressed his concern because according to him, gambling comes with addiction and psychological disorders. As a possible solution, he proposed the creation of a Gaming Regulatory Task Force in order to guarantee a strict regulated environment.
