FanDuel ends its services in the UK

The fantasy sports company has announced its retirement from the United Kingdom market, less than a year after it started operating in the territory.

UK.- Daily fantasy sports operator FanDuel has revealed that it will stop offering its services in the United Kingdom. The company informed its decision to its clients via email on Friday, and full refunds will be offered to those who still have money in their accounts.

The emails hinted that the exit may be temporary, as the company said that the hiatus is set for the 2017/2018 season, but hopes to “be back in the future, bringing you more of the games you love.” The statement detailed that in the year that the company operated in the territory customers won approximately £1 million, a number considerably lower than other DFS operators and its own business in the United States.

“As we approach the NFL season, we are allocating all of our resources towards ramping up a US product that consumers love and building out complementary fantasy sports products. There are over 53 million people playing fantasy sports in the United States and we are investing all of our resources on that market,” said a statement released by the company.

FanDuel launched its tailor-made services in the UK a year ago, a month after the UKGC (United Kingdom Gambling Commission) granted the license to operate in the country. FanDuel will focus its services on the US market, the same one that rejected the merger plans with DraftKings earlier this month. The biggest DFS companies reported that they dropped the attempts to appeal the decision two weeks ago, arguing that staying independent was in their best interest.
