The eSports industry reached US$1.5 billion in revenue in 2017 and is expected to exponentially grow by 2020.

US.- Year-to-date results indicate that the eSports industry achieved US$1.5 billion in revenue, and is expected to exponentially grow 26 percent by 2020. The report from Superdata reveals that the revenue growth will be fueled by an increase of viewership of 12 percent each year.

The report also revealed that the growth will be driven by an increase on the number of third-party investments. Superdata also commented that the opportunities for revenue streams are also on the rise, with direct revenue from ads, ticket sales, sponsorship sales and team merch increasing. It is estimated that in just 2017, more than US%750 million was invested in the market.

Morevover, reports have recently indicated that Asian and Asia-Pacific countries are the fastest growing sectors in the world when it comes to eSports: eSport gaming’s compounded annual growth is approximately 36.1 percent, with an audience of approximately 10 million people in 2017, expected to double in just three years to 19.8 million.

“eSports is getting more attention than traditional sport industries, and we see room for further growth,” said general manager of Sina Esports, Chu Yun Fan, late last month. Experts estimate that by 2024, it could be recognised as an Olympic game medal event.
